Parents’ Responsibilities To Teens Over COVID-19 Pregnancies

Many teens have become pregnant by their relatives over this COVID-19 period.

There have been numerous cases of rape, premature pregnancies and other sex-pregnancy related cases over the COVID-19 period. This has been attributed to indecent behaviour by the girls’ own family members, girls from the poor and underprivileged societies. They have fallen victim to their own uncles, fathers and brothers.

This matter has touched on the hearts of many who are parents. It has assured that some who were poor and undeserving will continue being so for a much longer time. This has been partly to blame on the parents who have not monitored the goings-on of their children. Many teens have been extremely idle and very vulnerable over this COVID-19 lock down period. Parents have a responsibility to watch over them.

Attached to this is the problem of a lack of proper sanitation for the teens undergoing menstruation. They have the challenge of accessing sanitary pads and the lock down only presents unwanted vulnerabilities for them. Truly, the teens need to be kept safe over the COVID-19 period. At least, the Henry’s Care Initiative has been on the forefront in helping deliver sanitary pads across schools in Ndhiwa even before COVID-19. This has been to 4 secondary schools and 26 primary schools. A total of 400 girls have been reached by this ongoing project to date.

“When parents fail to protect their children, the whole society fails”.

Alfred Yambo

Parents therefore must be there and very vigilant in their children’s lives more so the teens. They must ensure that they are behaving well and at the moment, taking lessons online through various apps. This is the only way to ensure that the rate of teenage pregnancies reduce and teens make better lives of themselves.
